You park your vehicle outside an office, apartment or shopping centre and return later only to find the parking space empty. The engine was never started, the keys are still with you, yet the car has moved. For Kenyan motorists and businesses, this is one situation where GPS towing alerts and vehicle tracking can provide useful visibility by showing that a vehicle has changed position even when the driver did not intentionally move it.

A professionally installed GPS tracker records the vehicle’s location and movement according to the device and configuration being used. If a car is loaded onto a tow truck and transported elsewhere, the tracker may continue reporting its changing location even though the vehicle’s own ignition remains off. An authorised owner can therefore check the latest reported position and compare it with where the vehicle was originally parked. In some systems, unexpected movement or geofence activity may also generate an alert.

Ignition information can make the situation easier to understand. A vehicle that moves several kilometres while the tracking platform continues showing the ignition as off creates a different pattern from an ordinary journey. It does not automatically prove that the vehicle has been illegally towed, because legitimate recovery, parking enforcement or workshop transport can produce the same pattern, but it gives the owner an immediate reason to investigate what happened.

Geofencing can provide another useful security layer. A virtual boundary can be placed around a home, office, yard or other regular parking location. Depending on the tracking setup, the owner may receive or later review an event showing that the vehicle left the defined area. This can be especially useful for company vehicles that are expected to remain inside a yard overnight or private vehicles that normally stay in the same parking area for long periods.

Trip history can also help reconstruct what happened after the vehicle disappeared. The tracking platform may show when the vehicle left the parking area, the route it followed and where it eventually stopped. This information can help distinguish between a short repositioning within a compound and a vehicle that was transported several kilometres away. GPS records should still be combined with information from parking management, security personnel, recovery companies or relevant authorities before conclusions are made.

A tracker is particularly useful when towing happens without the owner being present, but the system still depends on power, mobile communication and device condition. If the tracker has lost power, has been offline for a long period or is in an area with poor communication coverage, updates may be delayed. This is why vehicle owners should periodically check tracker health rather than waiting until an emergency to discover that the device has not been reporting normally.

For higher-risk vehicles, layered tracking can provide additional protection. A wired GPS tracker can handle normal daily monitoring, while a wireless backup tracker or tracking tag may provide another independent location source if the main unit is disconnected or compromised. Vehicle security is strongest when GPS tracking works together with alarms, immobilisation, secure parking and sensible access control rather than depending on one system alone.

Finatrack Global Ltd provides professionally installed GPS tracking solutions for private motorists and businesses that want better visibility over unexpected vehicle movement. Finatrack’s wired GPS tracker is available at KES 15,000, with features including location tracking, trip history, geofencing and selected alerts depending on the configured system. Wireless backup tracking and other vehicle-security options are also available. For installation or enquiries, call or WhatsApp 0723 645 810 or visit www.finatrack.co.ke. If your vehicle moves while the ignition is off, a GPS tracker can give you the information needed to find out where it went and begin asking the right questions.
