Vehicle security is most effective when it does not depend on a single device. A car alarm may discourage an opportunistic thief, while a GPS tracker can help locate a vehicle after it moves, but either system can become less effective if it is discovered or disabled. For Kenyan motorists protecting increasingly valuable vehicles, a layered security approach can provide stronger protection by combining several independent technologies that perform different roles.

The idea behind layered vehicle security is simple. Instead of relying on one system to prevent theft, the vehicle is protected by several barriers that a thief must overcome. One layer may detect unauthorised entry, another may prevent the engine from starting, another may track the vehicle’s location, while a separate backup device may continue providing information if the primary tracker is compromised.

The first layer should usually focus on preventing or detecting unauthorised access. Although a dashcam will not normally stop a theft by itself, footage can become useful after vandalism, attempted theft, road accidents or other incidents.

For commercial fleets, AI-enabled dashcams can add another dimension by monitoring driver fatigue, distraction and risky behaviour. Physical security should not be ignored simply because electronic technology has become more advanced. Secure parking, steering locks, wheel clamps and other visible barriers can still make a vehicle less attractive to opportunistic thieves. Even simple physical security measures can increase the amount of time and effort required to move the vehicle.

The key is not to assume that one expensive device automatically provides better protection than several carefully selected layers. A thief who defeats an alarm should still encounter an immobiliser. Someone who bypasses the immobiliser should still face GPS tracking. If the primary tracker is removed, a backup device should ideally remain.

Vehicle value should influence how many layers are justified. A motorist protecting a relatively modest private car may choose a reliable alarm, wired GPS tracker and immobilisation system. An owner protecting a high-value SUV, luxury vehicle or frequently targeted model may reasonably add a backup tracker, jamming detection and additional physical security.

Where the vehicle is parked also matters. A car kept overnight in a controlled compound may face different risks from one regularly left on public streets or open parking areas. A vehicle frequently driven by employees or different family members may also benefit from stronger monitoring and access controls.

Commercial vehicles require an even broader approach. Trucks, delivery vans and construction vehicles may need GPS tracking not only for theft protection but also for route management, fuel monitoring and driver accountability. In these cases, vehicle security becomes part of a wider telematics system rather than a standalone anti-theft installation.

Fuel monitoring can form another valuable layer for commercial operators. A truck may never be stolen while still losing substantial amounts of money through fuel drainage or unauthorised use. Integrating fuel sensors with GPS tracking allows businesses to monitor fuel activity alongside the vehicle’s location.

Financed vehicles may also have specific requirements. Banks, SACCOs and asset finance institutions may require tracking systems as part of the financing arrangement because the vehicle serves as security for the loan. Borrowers should confirm any lender requirements before choosing a security package so that the installed system meets both personal and contractual needs.

Professional installation remains one of the most important elements of layered security. A sophisticated system can become ineffective if wiring is poor, devices are positioned carelessly or security components are installed in predictable locations. Installation should therefore focus on reliability, concealment and correct integration with the vehicle.

The company behind the equipment matters as well. A GPS tracking provider may handle sensitive information showing where a vehicle is parked and where it travels. Account security is another layer that motorists often overlook. A GPS tracker may be hidden perfectly inside the dashboard, but weak or widely shared login credentials can expose vehicle information remotely. Tracking passwords should be protected carefully, and access should only be given to authorised users.

Businesses should apply stricter controls. Fleet managers should know who can view vehicles, who can access trip history and who is authorised to send security commands. Former employees should not retain unnecessary access after leaving the organisation or changing roles.

Maintenance is also essential. Vehicle owners should periodically confirm that the GPS tracker is communicating, the alarm is functioning and backup tracking devices still have sufficient battery power. Security systems should not be installed once and forgotten for several years.

The strongest vehicle security strategy is therefore not built around the question of which single device is best. It is built around what happens when one device fails.

If the main tracker is disconnected, is there a backup?

If the vehicle moves unexpectedly, will the owner receive an alert?
