A GPS tracker installed inside a car normally enjoys some protection from rain, mud and direct water exposure. The situation is very different for motorcycles, trailers, generators and construction equipment that may spend hours outdoors in rain, dust or harsh working environments. For these applications, choosing a waterproof GPS tracker in Kenya is not simply about convenience. The device, its wiring and the way it is installed must be capable of handling the conditions in which the asset actually operates.
The terms waterproof and water resistant are often used interchangeably, but they do not always mean the same thing. Tracking devices may carry an IP rating that indicates their level of protection against dust and water. A tracker designed for protected installation inside a dashboard may not be suitable for mounting where it receives direct rain or road spray. Fleet owners should therefore check the specifications of the device instead of assuming that every black plastic tracking unit can survive outdoor exposure.
Motorcycles make this particularly important because there are fewer completely enclosed areas available for installation. A motorcycle tracker may be exposed to rain, dust, engine heat, vibration and water thrown upwards by the tyres. The device should therefore be positioned discreetly in a protected location while still allowing reliable communication. Professional installation also includes protecting electrical connections so that water does not enter through exposed wiring even when the tracker casing itself is resistant to moisture.
Outdoor assets present similar challenges. A wireless GPS tracker attached to a generator, trailer or construction machine may remain outside for weeks at a time. Direct sunlight, dust and repeated rain can gradually affect poorly protected electronics. The tracker should therefore be selected according to the environment in which it will operate. An asset working on a dusty construction site may require more protection than a device kept inside the cabin of a delivery van.
Vehicle owners should also be careful when pressure washing motorcycles or equipment. A device that can tolerate ordinary rain may not necessarily withstand high-pressure water directed straight at its casing, wiring or connectors. Water can enter through damaged seals or connection points and later cause intermittent power or communication problems. Keeping the tracker away from direct pressure-washing zones can help protect the installation even when the device has a strong water-resistance rating.
Water damage does not always cause a tracker to fail immediately. Moisture inside connectors can create corrosion over time, resulting in a device that occasionally goes offline or loses power unexpectedly. If a motorcycle tracker repeatedly stops reporting after heavy rain or washing, the installation should be inspected rather than assuming there is a network problem. Damaged wiring, poor sealing or moisture around the power connection may be responsible.
The same principle applies to wireless trackers and tracking tags. These devices do not depend on vehicle wiring, making them useful for movable outdoor assets, but their casing, battery compartment and mounting position still matter. A long battery life is useful only if the device remains physically protected throughout that period. Businesses should therefore consider battery life, reporting frequency, water resistance, mounting method and operating environment together when choosing a tracker for outdoor equipment.
Finatrack Global Ltd provides GPS tracking solutions for motorcycles, vehicles and other mobile assets that require professional installation and reliable monitoring. Finatrack’s motorcycle GPS tracker is available from KES 7,500, while wireless tracking solutions are available for assets where permanent wiring may not be practical. For installation or guidance on selecting an appropriate device for outdoor conditions, call or WhatsApp 0723 645 810 or visit www.finatrack.co.ke. A good GPS tracker should not only tell you where your motorcycle or equipment is; it should also be installed in a way that allows it to keep working through the environment in which that asset is actually used.
