A GPS tracker is often installed out of sight precisely because its usefulness during a vehicle theft can depend on the person taking the car not knowing where it is. Yet no physical device hidden inside a vehicle should be assumed to be completely impossible to discover. A determined person with enough time, technical knowledge or access to the vehicle may eventually locate or interfere with a tracking device, which is why professional vehicle security should never depend on concealment alone.

Most professionally installed wired GPS trackers are positioned discreetly within the vehicle and connected to its electrical system. The objective is to keep the equipment away from obvious locations while allowing it to receive reliable power and communicate with the tracking platform. The quality of this installation can have a major influence on how easily the device is discovered.

Poor installation can undermine an otherwise capable tracking system. A tracker positioned somewhere obvious, connected using easily identifiable wiring or installed in exactly the same predictable location across every vehicle can become easier to find. This is one reason vehicle owners should pay attention to unusual tracker alerts. A tracker going offline does not automatically prove that somebody has removed it. Signal interference presents another challenge. GPS tracking systems depend on radio signals for positioning and communication, and deliberate interference can affect the ability of some systems to report normally. For vehicles facing elevated security risks, specialised tracking equipment may provide jamming detection or other functionality designed to identify suspicious communication interference.

However, motorists should be cautious about claims that any consumer tracking device is completely impossible to jam, remove or defeat. Vehicle security technology continuously evolves, and responsible providers should explain both the strengths and limitations of the systems they install.

An alarm and immobilisation system can therefore remain valuable even when GPS tracking is already fitted. GPS is primarily about visibility and monitoring, while an alarm helps detect unauthorised access and an immobiliser makes it harder to operate the vehicle. Combining these technologies means that defeating the tracker alone does not automatically make the vehicle easy to steal.

Vehicle owners can also use ignition alerts and geofencing to improve early detection. An unexpected ignition notification can warn the owner that somebody may be attempting to use the car, while a geofence alert can indicate that the vehicle has left an area where it was supposed to remain.

Early notification can be just as important as concealment. Discovering suspicious activity within minutes gives a vehicle owner and tracking provider considerably more information than discovering the theft several hours later.

There is also another side to the question of hidden GPS trackers. Sometimes a person may discover an unfamiliar tracking device on a vehicle they own and have no idea who installed it.

In such a situation, the issue is no longer simply vehicle security. It can also involve privacy.

Kenya’s Data Protection Act recognises location data as information that can identify a person directly or indirectly, and the law regulates how personal data is collected, used and processed. The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner also expressly includes GPS location data among the categories organisations may process when registering as data handlers.

Secretly tracking another person’s movements can therefore raise significant privacy and data-protection concerns depending on who installed the device, the purpose of the tracking and the circumstances involved. Vehicle owners who discover an unknown tracker should avoid immediately assuming who placed it there and should consider preserving evidence before taking further action.

Where malicious or unauthorised tracking is suspected, photographing the device and its location before it is disturbed can help preserve information about how it was installed. If there are genuine safety or criminal concerns, the matter can be referred to the appropriate authorities rather than beginning a personal confrontation with whoever is suspected of installing it.

The safest approach to removing an unfamiliar device from your own vehicle is usually to have the vehicle inspected by a competent automotive or tracking technician. Modern vehicles contain extensive wiring and electronic systems, and cutting unfamiliar wires without understanding their purpose can create electrical faults or affect legitimate equipment.

The same principle applies when purchasing a second-hand vehicle. An existing tracker may have been installed by the previous owner, a lender, an insurer or another authorised party. Before removing it, the new owner should establish whether the device remains connected to an existing tracking or financing arrangement.

If the vehicle has been financed, owners should be particularly cautious about interfering with tracking equipment. Banks and other lenders may require tracking as part of the financing agreement, and removing or disabling the equipment without establishing the contractual position could create problems with the lender.

For businesses, tracker tampering should also be treated as an operational issue. If an employee or driver deliberately interferes with a company vehicle’s tracking equipment, the business should investigate the event according to its internal procedures rather than relying solely on assumptions derived from a device going offline.

Fleet managers can strengthen their systems by monitoring communication status and responding to repeated unexplained outages. A vehicle that regularly disappears from the tracking platform at particular times or locations deserves technical investigation to determine whether the cause is coverage, equipment failure or deliberate interference.

So, can someone detect or remove a hidden GPS tracker?
